National & Regional Newspapers

National Newspapers

  • The Mail on Sunday is to see Sarah Hartley leave her role as Health Editor. Sarah, who is to work elsewhere within the newspaper, will be succeeded by Barney Calman. (barney.calman@mailonsunday.co.uk)
  • On 6th March the News of the World is to launch a men’s magazine covering men’s fashion and grooming as well as investigative features, gadgets, fitness, food, music and film. Mark Hayman, currently Creative Director of sister magazine Fabulous, will edit the title and Joely Carey has been appointed Editorial Director of both magazines.
  • Peter Hill is leaving his role as Editor of the Daily Express. Peter, who held the role for seven years, will be succeeded by Deputy Editor Hugh Whittow. (hugh.whittow@express.co.uk)
  • Guardian Media Group has announced that Tim Brooks is leaving his roles as Managing Director of Guardian News & Media and as a Director of GMG. His departure comes as the role of Managing Director of Guardian News & Media has been made redundant, a result of the ongoing reshaping of the business. Tim leaves on 31st March.

Regional Newspapers

  • The KM Group's Kent Messenger has named Denise Eaton as its new Editor. Densie, currently Editor of the group’s Gravesend and Dartford Messenger Series, will be the paper's first female editor when she steps into the role on 28th February. Current Editor of the Kent Messenger and the Medway Messenger Bob Bounds retains his role at the Medway Messenger and will take on additional responsibility for the Gravesend portfolio.   • London Evening Standard's ES Magazine has seen Editor Sasha Slater leave. Executive Editor Andrew Barker can be contacted at es.magazine@standard.co.uk
  • Local News Glasgow has ceased publishing after 14 years. The paper was a free monthly published and edited by Grace Franklin.

People Moves

  • Future has announced two appointments within its Entertainment portfolio. James Kick, responsible for overseeing the games marketing team, has been promoted to Associate Publisher. He will be responsible for Official PlayStation, PSM3 and FirstPlay as well the annual Golden Joystick Awards. Secondly, Future has appointed Don Ditri as Associate Publisher Digital, responsible for CVG, GamesRadar, www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk and www.oxm.co.uk. Don, most recently Commercial Development Manager at CBS Interactive, takes on the role in March.
  • More! magazine has welcomed Emma Kniveton as Fashion Assistant. (emma.kniveton@bauermedia.co.uk)
  • Harper's Bazaar has seen Sophie Neophitou-Apostolou leave. As yet, no appointment has been made to replace her as Creative Director.
  • Toxic, a children's magazine covering games, movies and sport published by Egmont Magazines UK, has seen Sub Editor Luke Paton leave. No replacement has been appointed as yet.
  • Golnaz Alibagi is to join Soul & Spirit as Deputy Editor at the end of February. She will be contactable at golnaz@aceville.co.uk

Stops and Starts

  • Eye to Eye Media, publisher of monthly food magazine delicious, is to launch Healthy Food Guide. The title, which will cover nutrition, practical food tips and recipes, will see its first edition published on 3rd March. Hannah Douglas is Editorial Assistant. (hannah.douglas@eyetoeyemedia.co.uk)

Website Changes

  • Bauer Media has redesigned FHM's website, www.fhm.com. The new look includes simplified navigation, a blog-style news format, 'Featured' content slots and a new column of articles. The website's content is created by FHM's editorial team, who work across both the magazine and website. (general@fhm.com)

Frequency Changes

  • The List, an entertainment and lifestyle guide for Glasgow and Edinburgh, is reducing its frequency. From 2nd March the magazine will move from a fortnightly frequency to monthly. (editor@list.co.uk)

National Broadcast

  • BBC Radio 5 Live has named Rachel Burden as the new co-presenter of 5 Live Breakfast, succeeding Shelagh Fogarty who is moving to a new lunchtime slot. Rachel, who will co-host alongside Nicky Campbell, is currently the station's Weekend Breakfast co-presenter. Rachel takes on the new role on 3rd May.
  • Wall to Wall, a producer of factual and drama programming, has named Richard Thomson as Managing Director and has also promoted Leanne Klein to the role of Creative Director. (mail@walltowall.co.uk)
  • Jane Johnson has been named as Director of Sky Living. Jane is currently Saturday and Associate Editor of The Sun.
  • Former Sky Sports presenter and commentator Richard Keys and Andy Gray are to join talkSPORT. From 14th February the pair will present a daily weekday show between 10:00 and 13:00.
  • The BBC Trust's review has seen the approval of BBC Radio 7 being repositioned as Radio 4 Extra, as well as a new strategy for children's audio seeing the refocusing of children's programming. Furthermore, there will be a development of permanent collections of on-demand content for Radio 3, Radio 4 and BBC 4.
  • The BBC has named Matt Roberts as the new presenter of MotoGP. Matt, who has worked for the broadcaster as a reporter, a co-presenter and a presenter, takes on the role on 20th March at the first race of 2011 in Losail, Qatar.

The fundamentals of working with bloggers are the same as with traditional journalists at traditional media outlets: respect their schedules; take time to read their material to learn their interests; and only contact them if/when they want to be contacted.

  • Breaks Of 10 is a blog covering fashion and urban lifestyle. Breaks Of 10 discusses anything from fashion and photography to music and street art. It showcases cultural happenings within UK's Street Scene. The blog has an archive dating back to April 2008.
  • Metal Mummy is a blog covering motherhood. The Metal Mummy blog discusses anything from family lifestyle and baby product reviews to food recipes and competitions. The blog has an archive dating back to June 2009.
  • Hip Shapes and Bristol Fashion is a blog covering fashion. The Hip Shapes and Bristol Fashion blog discusses anything from shopping and styling to trends from Bristol. The blog, which is written is by Niki Whittle, has an archive dating back to November 2008 and shares an extensive blog roll.      
  • ALTER THE PRESS! is a blog covering music. It discusses anything from rock and punk to emo and hardcore music. The blog also provides up-to-date news, reviews and band interviews. The blog features an extensive blog roll.
