It’s been over six months since we first published our Top 50 UK blogs, and there have been a number of changes in this time. Our UK index grew considerably in the second half of last year, so there are now more blogs under analysis. This time around, we’re focusing on independent blogs, that is, blogs with no direct affiliation to mainstream publishing organizations – so no Coffee House, no Alphaville, no Robert Peston.
We’ve also been continually revising our methodology in response to direct feedback from the blogosphere (and the Twitosphere), relating to both the original Top 50 and the subsequent weekly Top 10s.
While we continue to put a premium on link analysis, there is now a greater weighting for engagement as expressed by the volume and nature of comments on the blogs. To recognize the fact that our traffic sources contain a US-bias, we’re now putting less emphasis on monthly uniques.
The impact of these changes can be clearly seen in the revised Top 50. The large number of political blogs reflects the fact that, while UK readers will readily turn to international sources for news about technology, even celebrity, those with an appetite for UK political debate are best served by the UK blogosphere.
Even so, Mashable continues to head the list. By most counts the world’s leading technology blog, Mashable was a controversial inclusion last time. But we still believe that, despite being international in reach and authorship, the blog’s Scottish roots allow the UK blogosphere to make a claim on it...
